THIRTEEN-WEEK CASH-FLOW FORECAST AND WORKING-CAPITAL WORKBOOK

Forecast start: [Forecast start date] · Version: [Forecast version number] · Prepared by: [Name of the preparer] · Approved by: [Name of the approver]

This is management's forecast, prepared with the firm's help. It is not an examination of prospective financial information under SAE 3400, and it must leave the company over a member of management's name, not the firm's.

What the workbook does

The workbook answers three questions every week: will the company have enough cash in each of the next thirteen weeks, where is the working capital tied up, and how much can be drawn on the cash-credit limit. It has six sheets. Assumptions holds every input that is not a weekly figure. Week calendar turns the start date into thirteen weeks and marks the weeks in which TDS, PF and ESI, GST, month-end payments and advance tax fall due. 13-week cash flow is the forecast itself. Weekly variance compares last week's forecast with what happened. Working capital computes debtor, inventory and creditor days and the cash conversion cycle for twelve months. Drawing power computes the drawing power under the cash-credit limit from the same month-end figures.

Method

1. Start from cash, not profit. The forecast uses the direct method: actual receipts and actual payments, week by week. Opening cash is the sum of the reconciled bank balances of every account on the start date, taken from the Bank reconciliation statement (FV06-E3), plus cash in hand. A drawn cash credit or overdraft is entered as a negative balance. Deposits under lien and margin money are excluded, because they cannot be spent.
