1. Objective and the requirements applied

Irrespective of the assessed risk of management override of controls, SA 240 paragraph 32(a) requires us to test the appropriateness of journal entries recorded in the general ledger and of other adjustments made in preparing the financial statements, and in doing so (i) to inquire of individuals involved in the financial reporting process about inappropriate or unusual activity in the processing of journal entries and other adjustments, (ii) to select journal entries and other adjustments made at the end of the reporting period, and (iii) to consider the need to test journal entries and other adjustments throughout the period. Paragraphs A41 to A44 explain that override is commonly effected through inappropriate or unauthorised entries, often at the period end or through adjustments that never pass through a formal journal, and direct the selection to the assessed fraud risks, the controls over journal entries, the nature of the evidence available, the characteristics of fraudulent entries (unrelated, unusual or seldom-used accounts; users who do not normally post; period-end or post-closing entries with little or no explanation; entries without account numbers; round or consistently ending amounts), complex accounts and entries outside the normal course of business.

SA 330 paragraph 20 requires us to agree or reconcile the financial statements with the underlying accounting records and to examine material journal entries and other adjustments made in preparing them. SA 500 paragraph 9 requires us to evaluate whether information produced by the entity is sufficiently reliable, including its completeness and accuracy: the population is therefore reconciled to the trial balance in section 4 before any filter is run.
